Frequently asked questions
The stuff people actually ask us. If your question isn't here, our contact page is open.
Is Game Spotter free?+
Yep, completely free. There's no account needed and no paywall. We make money through affiliate commission when you buy through our links, which costs you nothing extra and keeps the lights on.
Do you actually sell games?+
No. We're a comparison site, not a shop. We show you who has a game and for how much, then you buy from that store directly. We never see your payment details.
How often are prices updated?+
We refresh store feeds throughout the day and re-match prices to products daily, so what you see is usually current. That said, prices move fast, so always check the final price on the store's own site before you pay.
What is a grey market key, and is it safe?+
Some stores are marketplaces where sellers resell game keys, often sourced cheaper from other regions. They're usually a lot cheaper, which is great, but they're not selling on behalf of the publisher, so support can be patchy if a key ever has a problem. For most single player games it's fine. If you want zero hassle, stick to authorised stores. We'll always be upfront about which is which.
How do your affiliate links work?+
If you click through to a store and buy, we may get a small commission. It doesn't add anything to your price and it doesn't change how we rank deals. The cheapest genuine price is always the cheapest, full stop. More detail is on our affiliate disclosure.
The price was different when I clicked through. Why?+
Usually because the store updated its price after our last refresh, or a sale started or ended. Region, currency, and edition can also differ. The checkout price on the store is always the real one. If you spot a price that's way off, give us a nudge on the contact page.
Can I get a heads up when a game gets cheaper?+
Yes. Open any game page and set a price alert with your target price. We'll email you the moment it drops to that price or lower at any store we track.
How accurate is your price matching?+
We match thousands of store listings to products automatically and re-check them every day, so the big majority are spot on. But it is a best-endeavour system: with so many stores, regions and editions, the odd listing can be mismatched or a little out of date, and now and then a game might show a price that looks off. The checkout price on the store is always the real one. If you spot something wrong, there is a Report a problem link on every product page (or use our contact page) and we will sort flagged issues quickly.
Which stores do you compare?+
You can see the current list on our stores page. We're adding more all the time, and we mix authorised retailers with the cheaper key marketplaces so you get the full picture.
